Terence Craig

Director and Chief Investment Officer

Terence joined Element Investment Managers in 2001 and was appointed as a Director and Chief Investment Officer. He has worked in financial services since 1991. Prior to joining Element Investment Managers, Terence qualified as a CA (SA) after completing his articles with Ernst & Young and then worked at Allan Gray Ltd as an equity analyst and portfolio manager after which he became a director of Taita, a private equity firm.

Terence has been responsible for developing and documenting Element Investment Managers investment philosophy and investment process (including the incorporation of Responsible Investment principles as an integral part of this process) and growing the investment team since joining the firm in 2001.

At the University of Cape Town he was awarded:

  • Standard Bank Scholarship, Entrance Merit Scholarship, was on the Dean's Merit List and was awarded the class medals for Applied Business Statistics II and for Business Finance II (his Business Science special field).

Matthew Kreeve

B Com (Hons) (McGill)
Portfolio Manager

Matthew has worked in Investment Management since 1994 when he returned to South Africa after completing his B Com (Hons) at McGill University in Montreal, Canada and joined Allan Gray Limited as Fixed Interest and derivatives trader. From 1996 to 1998 he worked at Southern Asset Management as a Fundamental Quantitative Analyst, later becoming a Portfolio Manager where his focus was on designing, back-testing and implementing active quant models. In 1998 he joined PSG Investment Bank leaving in 2002 as head of the Listed Equity Desk and manager of its Equity Hedge Fund. After taking a sabbatical to travel Matthew joined Element Investment Managers in June 2004.

Matthew has been responsible for the detailed Quantitative screening process, Income fund management, Hedge fund management and trading at Element Investment Managers since joining in 2004 and, in addition, was appointed a Portfolio Manager in April 2006.

Mohamed Shafee Loonat

B Com (Eco), B Compt & Advanced Tax (Hons), CA (SA), CFA, PG Dip (Islamic Banking and Insurance)
Portfolio Manager

Mohamed Shafee has worked in Investment Management since 1998 when he joined Alliance Capital Management (now Alliance Bernstein) where he spent five years as part of the South African and emerging markets equities team. He joined ABVEST in August 2003, where he was the Head of Industrials in the Equities team and was portfolio manager for the ABSA Rand Protector Fund.

Mohamed Shafee joined Element Investment Managers in July 2006 as an Investment Analyst. He was appointed a Portfolio Manager in October 2007 and, in addition, is responsible for Shari'ah investment management and products at Element Investment Managers.

Johny Lambridis

B Econ Sc, FFA
Portfolio Manager

Johny, a qualified actuary, has worked in the Investment industry since 1997. Prior to joining Element Investment Managers he was a Director, Head of Research and Equity analyst at Citigroup where he helped co-found the SA equity business in 2001. He was a top 3 rated Life Assurance analyst for six years including being the no. 1 ranked Life Assurance analyst from 2005-2007 per the FM analyst ranking surveys. Prior to joining Citigroup Johny worked as an equity analyst at ING Barings after previously working in the life assurance industry for Liberty Holdings.

Johny joined Element Investment Managers in May 2008 as an Investment Analyst and was appointed a portfolio manager in October 2009.

David Couldridge

Investment Analyst

Prior to joining Element Investment Managers, David qualified as a Chartered Accountant and has been involved in financial services since 1985. David has undertaken a number of roles including external audit, internal audit, financial management, taxation compliance and planning and senior management. Audit, risk and compliance assignments were undertaken in South Africa, UK and USA.

He completed a Masters programme at the University of Cape Town engineering faculty using his thesis to develop an Inclusive Integrated Governance Framework. The framework is used as one of the inputs to assess the corporate governance of all potential investee companies for Element Investment Managers. David attended the Henley International Governance conference each year from 2003 to 2007 and presented 3 papers covering integrated governance, remuneration and shareholder activism in South Africa. In addition he has presented a number of times internationally at United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment conferences.

David joined Element Investment Managers in April 2006 as an investment analyst with a focus on Responsible Investment. David has been involved in a number of engagements with South African companies to improve Environmental, Social and Corporate governance (ESG) issues, co-ordinates our Independent Advisory Board meetings and leads Element Investment Manager's active participation in the Emerging Market Disclosure Project.

Graeme Ronne

B Com (Hons)
Investment Analyst

Graeme Ronne has been with Element Investment Managers since 2006 as an investment analyst. Prior to joining Element Investment Managers he spent 2 years at Investec Private Bank as a consultant in the wealth management division. Graeme completed a B Com (Hons) at the University of Cape Town and is a candidate in the CFA Program.

Rene Prinsloo

B Sc (Hons), FFA
Investment Analyst

Rene joined Element Investment Managers in 2007 as an investment analyst. His role focuses primarily on developing and maintaining quantitative and screening models to complement Element Investment Managers' fundamental investment process. Prior to joining Element Investment Managers he spent 2 years as a fund analyst at Glacier where his role involved analysing unit trusts and assisting retail investors in portfolio construction. Before joining Glacier, René spent two years as lecturer in Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Stellenbosch. Rene is a qualified Actuary.

Luxolo Mehlomakulu

B Com (Acc), Higher Certificate in Financial Markets, Management Accounting Diploma
Principal Dealer

Luxolo has worked in the Investment Management industry since 1997. Prior to joining Element Investment Managers he spent six years at Coronation Fund Managers, where his roles included that of Equity Trader and Client Relationship Manager, followed by three years at Futuregrowth Asset Management as an Equities Trader.

Luxolo joined Element Investment Managers in September 2007 as Principal Dealer.

Steven Barber

B Eng (E + E + Com Sci) (cum laude)
Investment Analyst

Steven has been with Element Investment Managers since 2008, focusing on quantitative analysis. Prior to this, Steven spent 2 years working on software development and implementation of a leading global electronic payment system. Steven has an electrical and electronic engineering degree with computer science (cum laude) from Stellenbosch University and has completed all three levels of the CFA examinations.

Warrick Erlank

Investment Analyst

Warrick joined Element Investment Managers in 2007 as an investment analyst. His role focuses on portfolio construction and the implementation of portfolio decisions. Prior to joining Element Investment Managers, he spent 2 years as a statistical analyst at Medscheme Health Risk Solutions. Warrick completed a Masters in Mathematical Statistics at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2008 and is currently a candidate in the CFA Program.

Dr Anwah Nagia

Chairman

Dr Anwah Nagia is one of Cape Town's foremost anti-Apartheid social activists and the Executive Chairman of Element Investment Managers. He is also the Executive Chairman of Altius Investment Holdings, the Non-Executive Chairman of Cape Town Market and Africa Commodities Group and the Chairman of the District Six Beneficiary and Redevelopment Trust.

In 2005, the Minister of Finance appointed him as Director of the Financial Service Board (Directorate of Market Abuse), with particular responsibility for market abuse on the JSE.  This appointment has been extended for a further 3 years to the end of 2011.

He serves on the Senate and Council of the University of Western Cape. He is also the Chairman of various NGO bodies including the Mustadafin Foundation, which is one of the largest relief and feeding schemes in the country feeding approximately 1.2m people per annum. He is the founder member of the District Six Museum foundation and serves as an Executive Member on that board. Dr Nagia has been involved in many contempary and national issues and has spoken and lectured in Sweden, Denmark and United Kingdom on the Built Environment and related social issues. In 2004 Dr Nagia received an Honouree Doctorate together with the National Minister of Education Mrs Naledi Pandor in recognition for their work involving community and technology.  In the late 80's he was responsible for setting up learnerships for adult basic education in the clothing factories. In the mid 90's he was the Deputy Chairman of the Western Cape Nursing Council of South Africa and has been involved in the protection of Woodstock and Somerset Hospital for the continued use of those facilities for the communities. 

Ian Jones

Director and Chief Operating Officer

Ian Jones has been with Element Investment Managers since June 2008 and was appointed as Director in November 2008.  He has worked in financial services since 1996.  Prior to joining Element Investment Managers, Ian spent five years working in Australia where his most recent role was heading up Pricing and Profitability for Retail Products at MLC, a large wealth manager in Australia.  Ian is a qualified actuary.

Kevin Lee Son

B Com, CA (SA)
Chief Financial Officer

Kevin qualified as a CA (SA) after completing his articles with Ernst & Young and has worked in financial services since 1999. Prior to joining Element Investment Managers, he spent four years working at BOE ending as Finance Manager in the Wealth management division as well as two years as financial manager for a Medical Scheme.

Kevin joined Element Investment Managers in May 2006 as Chief Financial Officer.

Natalie Smith

Business Development Manager

Natalie joined Element Investment Managers at the beginning of October 2008 as Business development Manager. Her role is to focus on our Retail and Private client business and add value to our clients and financial advisors' investment requirements. Natalie brings significant experience to the position.  Before joining Element Investment Managers, Natalie worked for Sanlam Investment Management as Retail Fund Specialist and Coronation Fund Managers as Account Manager. She also gained working experience working in London as an Assistant Dealer at the Bank of New York. She holds a BA (Law) degree from the University of Stellenbosch as well as AUT certificates.

Johnny Brom

Business Development Manager

Johnny joined Element Investment Managers in January 2010 as a Business Development Manager. His role is to focus on our Johannesburg and Durban Retail client business and add value to our client’s investment process. Prior to joining Element Investment Managers, Johnny spent time working in Canada as a regional financial consultant for AIL-Altig International (a Fortune 500 firm). Upon returning to South Africa he worked for JP Morgan South Africa as a valuation specialist before joining Element Investment Managers. He holds a B Bus Sc (Hons) degree from the University of Cape Town and is currently studying towards his MSc (Finance) through the University of London. Johnny is also a candidate in the CFA program.

Glenda Speckmann

B Com (Hons), CA(SA)
Operations Manager

Glenda Speckmann qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1998, after completing her articles with PricewaterhouseCoopers. She continued her career in the profession, focussing on the financial services sector in both an assurance and consulting capacity. Glenda joined Element Investment Managers in November 2008 as Operations Manager.

Brenda Lambrick

Brenda has 14 years experience in the financial services industry. Prior to joining Element Investment Managers in March 2008 she worked at Allan Gray, PSG Fund Management and Prudential Portfolio Managers. She has broad industry involvement and has sat on various industry committees. Her responsibilities include unit trust operations and compliance. Brenda has a Certificate in Compliance Management.

Mareldia Dollie

Unit Trust Client Service

Mareldia Dollie joined Element Investment Managers in November 2002. Mareldia's role is that of providing Unit Trust Administration and Client Service to our retail clients. She has 13 years experience in the financial services industry and worked at HSBC for six years as a supervisor in the operations area.

Hilda Snyders

Institutional Client Service

Hilda Snyders joined Element Investment Managers in September 2006 in Institutional Client Service and Administration. Hilda has been working within the financial services sector for the past 17 years having spent five years at Nedbank and then had roles as a Client Liaison Officer at Symmetry, Investec Asset Management and Allan Gray.
